The Most Strategic 15 Minutes of Your Day

Leaders often feel guilty taking a break, especially when their to-do list feels endless and the calendar is double-booked. (Definitely my work life for the last 10+ years 🤦🏾‍♀️) However, here’s the truth: your next great idea probably won’t come while you’re staring at your screen. 💡

A well-timed coffee break isn’t a distraction; it’s a catalyst. Those 15 minutes give your mind space to breathe, your ideas room to connect, and your perspective a chance to reset. Science backs it up...our brains thrive on periods of rest, reflection, and recalibration. When you intentionally step away from the grind, you create the mental clarity needed to make smarter decisions, inspire creativity, and lead with confidence.

☕️ So before your next big meeting or decision, pause. Pour your coffee. Step away for a moment. That clarity you’ve been chasing might just be waiting in your next sip.

Here are three strategies to make your coffee breaks more intentional and strategic:

☕️ 1. The Reflection Reset

Use one break each day to ask yourself three quick questions:

  • What’s working well right now?

  • What’s draining my energy?

  • What deserves my focus next?

This simple check-in helps you separate noise from priority. It transforms a passive break into a moment of strategic clarity.

🧠 2. The Creativity Circuit

If you're anything like me, when you're focused on a task or a lengthy to-do list, hours can fly by without you noticing...until you get a case of brain fog. To combat this, I like to incorporate creativity circuits into my workday. Step away from your workspace completely — walk outside, grab your coffee, or move to a new environment. Changing your scenery activates different parts of your brain, helping you connect ideas you might’ve missed while “in the zone.” Keep your phone down and your mind open.

💬 3. The Connection Conversation

Invite a colleague or team member for a 15-minute “coffee chat” with one rule: no work talk for the first 5 minutes. Those genuine moments of human connection rebuild trust, boost morale, and often spark unexpected insights once the conversation naturally turns back to business.

Remember, your coffee break can be more than a pause; it can be a pivot point. It’s the small moment that helps you zoom out, realign with your goals, and return to your work with renewed focus and purpose. It's a chance for you to not only reconnect with yourself, but also with colleagues or team members, without it turning into a status meeting. So, schedule this strategic 15 minutes on your calendar and commit to incorporating one or all of these today!
